Ingredients
- 1 lb ground chicken
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Optional toppings: sliced pickles, shredded cheese, coleslaw
Instructions
1️⃣ Cook the vegetables: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced bell pepper and onion, and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until softened.
2️⃣ Add the garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.
3️⃣ Cook the chicken: Add the ground chicken to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon as it cooks, stirring until the chicken is fully cooked and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
4️⃣ Add the sauce and seasonings: Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
5️⃣ Toast the buns: While the chicken mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns in a separate skillet or toaster until golden brown.
6️⃣ Assemble the sandwiches: Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Add any optional toppings, such as sliced pickles, shredded cheese, or coleslaw. Place the top halves of the buns on and press down gently.
7️⃣ Serve: Serve hot and enjoy these flavorful, slightly spicy Cajun Chicken Sloppy Joes!
Notes
- For added heat, toss in some hot sauce or extra Cajun seasoning.
- Pair the sloppy joes with fries, chips, or a simple green salad for a complete meal.
- Ground turkey or beef can be substituted for chicken if preferred.
